How much does Family law solicitors cost in Edinburgh? (2026 price guide)

Family law fees vary considerably by case type: an uncontested divorce typically costs £500-£1,500 in legal fees on top of the court fee, while a contested divorce involving disputes over finances or children can run £3,000-£10,000 or more. Drafting a consent order for a financial settlement usually costs £500-£1,200, and child arrangement disputes typically run £150-£300 per hour of solicitor time given how long they can take to resolve.

Costs depend mainly on whether a case is contested or agreed between both parties, the complexity of any financial assets involved, how many court hearings are needed, and whether mediation is used to reach agreement before involving solicitors fully. Mediation is usually significantly cheaper than a fully contested court process.

Trying mediation first, where appropriate, often reduces overall legal costs considerably compared with a fully litigated dispute, and fixed-fee packages for straightforward divorces can offer more predictable costs.
