What customers say

Based on genuine customer reviews

Remortgages, Help To Buy repayments, transfers of equity and first purchases make up the cases clients most often describe when discussing this Derby conveyancing practice. Named paralegals recur throughout the accounts: Timothy Hill is credited with patience and thoroughness on a complicated transfer of equity, Millie with an efficient remortgage handled from instruction to completion, Faiza with keeping a remortgage and Help To Buy repayment on track, and Evie with guiding a first purchase through every stage so that it felt manageable.

Regular updates form the strongest repeated theme, with purchasers and remortgagors reporting that questions were answered promptly and explained in plain terms, easing the strain of unfamiliar procedures such as compliance screening. Set against this, reviewers frequently point to missed completion dates, additional mortgage payments and slow replies, with settlement letters carrying another person's details or an incorrect redemption figure. Those accounts concern cases where a straightforward transaction became drawn out, and communication around compliance checks was felt to be lacking. Where momentum was maintained, clients point to clear and consistent contact from the individual handling their file.

Don’t even deserve 1 star. These solicitors were acting on behalf of our potential buyer but because of their incompetence, laziness, and lack of communication, our buyer withdrew from the transaction mere days before we were due to complete and exchange. The buyer said this was down to the length of time the queries were taking and Sort Legal are the reason for this. They dragged out simple enquires which had been resolved months ago; they couldn’t even see signatures in documents which were clearly signed. Would NOT recommend this bunch of cowboys to anyone. If you want a quick and stress free move, please go elsewhere.

I completed the purchase of my first home last week, and I couldn’t have done it without Evie’s incredible support. Throughout the process, she took the time to help me understand every stage, answered all of my questions, and made what could have been a stressful experience feel straightforward and manageable. Thank you so much, Evie, for all your hard work and support. I truly appreciate everything you’ve done, and I would highly recommend you to anyone going through the home-buying process.

I am in a very short chain and have been since 11th March. My buyers appointed sort legal. Had I known the issues I was going to face I would have rejected their offer. 18 weeks on and still haven't exchanged. My solicitors and estate agents have never experienced such incompetence. Draft contracts were issued and they went awol for 4 weeks. No response whatsoever. A response was only received when the estate agent escalated the matter to the senior management team. We are still to complete with them taking 5 days to respond to the only outstanding enquiry. Avoid appointing them. If anyone in your chain is using them find another buyer.

I am currently in a very small chain where Sort legal are acting for the buyers. So far my experience is that they are very slow to respond, have sent documents out with incorrect names, missing attachments and have requested information from us regarding surveys that they themselves asked the buyer to pay for and had received already. It feels like the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing and they are making a very simple transaction overly difficult, costing everyone more money and stress.

I would not recommend Sort Legal based on my experience. Our remortgage was due to complete on 1st July, but the deadline was missed, resulting in additional mortgage payments and unnecessary stress. Our assigned paralegal, Faiza, was dealing with our case. After the completion was missed, my partner contacted the lender directly to find out what was causing the delay. Within minutes, he was informed that the lender had emailed Faiza on 23rd June requesting information needed to progress the remortgage. That email was not responded to until after we chased the matter ourselves. As clients, we should not have had to investigate what was holding up our own remortgage. That should have been managed by the legal team. What has disappointed me even more is the lack of accountability. I have repeatedly asked Faiza for the direct contact details of her manager or someone senior so I could formally escalate my complaint. Those requests have been ignored, and instead I have been told someone would contact me, but that has not happened. A remortgage is a time-sensitive legal transaction. Missing deadlines has real financial consequences, and in our case it has resulted in additional costs through no fault of our own. I am extremely disappointed with the service we have received from Sort Legal and sincerely hope they review how cases are managed and how complaints are handled so that other clients do not experience the same situation.

I have just completed my remortgage with Sort Legal and have to say that sadly it has been the most horrific and unprofessional experience of my entire adult life. The service was beyond incompetent. I had to have 3 settlement letters sent. The first letter was for a completely different individual entirely. This must be a serious breach of personal data protection and security. The second had completely the wrong redemption figure and the third attempt was also wrong. When we finally got the correct amount, there was an issue with the mortgage amount being insufficient to cover the revised mortgage (not a legal issue) and the balance i needed to pay was unclear and no bank details for settle the difference was included. The day before my mortgage needed to be renewed i finally got the paperwork in order but despite 4 requests for banking details and clear completion instructions this was not forthcoming. This was the most stressful, frustrating and difficult experience and this from a solicitor who we should be able to trust and have faith in was beyond shocking. Sadly this business was enforced upon us but if anyone else knowing engages with this organisation then do so at your own risk. I personally will do all i can to warn others of the perils of Sort Legal.

Excellent service! We used Sort Legal for a remortgage and it all went very smoothly. Everything was clearly explained and the communication from Millie was excellent. I highly recommend them.
