What customers say

Based on genuine customer reviews

Family, employment, estate planning and tax matters sit alongside a strong residential property practice at this Portsmouth firm, and reviewers repeatedly highlight conveyancing and new-build purchases as areas where the team performs well. Named staff including Salih, Ian Peach, Natalie, Shona Archer, Ed Davies and Andrew Jerrard are credited with responsiveness and careful handling of complex transactions, among them a chain made difficult by the buyer's representative, while Andrew Jerrard is singled out for preparing contracts for a newly launched translation company. Clear advice and a friendly welcome recur across departments.

A theme running through the feedback is speed, with one purchase completed in under six weeks and prompt replies throughout. The recurring complaint concerns communication as matters approach completion, when calls and emails reportedly go unanswered and clients must chase progress; some transactions stretched over long periods before deeds arrived. Poor communication over mortgage funds, paperwork errors and missed deadlines are also described. Praise for approachable staff and thorough conveyancing therefore sits alongside real frustration at slow progress and inconsistent updates, especially on shared ownership and new-build purchases.

Very slow. Only just received our deeds through today after nearly two years. If you’re buying a new build and this is a recommendation from the house builder, pay more and use a solicitor that isn’t affiliated. They don’t answer their phones and are extremely slow. It seems if you want something done, be prepared to add chasing as an extra after work activity! Otherwise, things won’t get done. We wouldn’t use again when we come to sell. We also had issues during the completion and mistakes were made by the conveyancer.

Great service by Coffin Mew. Shona Archer and Ed Davies were extremely helpful and managed to secure our new built flat without any hassle. We have completed our new build help to buy purchase today and very happy. I recommend Coffin Mew specially Shona and Ed for those who want to purchase their flat and are looking for top quality solicitors.

Dont use this company if you value your time and sanity, we used them when buying our first shared ownership house and at first they seemed OK, but when it came close to completing our mortgage I could never get hold of them, we dealt with Elisabeth Smith, the main desk would always say she's not in the office, we will get her to call you back, she never called back, never responded to emails, nobody in the whole business was able to help us apparently apart from Elisabeth Smith who was never available, there was a period of 2 weeks at one point where I emailed and called at least 3 times a day every day and still no response. The night before completion of our property at 5pm one of the members of staff at Coffin Mew sent us an email stating they had received our mortgage funds from the lender which was £399 short, this amount was for the lenders fees which we needed to pay that evening to Coffin Mews bank account otherwise we wouldn't be able to complete in the morning. Obviously this was very stressful as we had the mortgage offer stating that the lenders fees would be added to the mortgage and repaid over the term, but when we tried to contact Coffin Mew that evening to inform them of this as soon as we received the email, they had all gone home, we managed to speak to somebody from Coffin Mew out of hours who informed us that it wasn't down to them to make sure the mortgage funds being transferred from the lender is correct despite the fact they charged us £2000 for their services, we just needed to pay the shortfall to complete in the morning, obviously we had no choice but to pay this. We are now in the process of renewing our mortgage and have been advised by our mortgage advisor and our mortgage lender that we have paid the lenders fee amount of £399 twice as it has been added to the mortgage to be repaid over the term and we also paid it upfront the night before completion, so we have been in contact with the lender to see if we can get a refund and they have advised that they can initiate a refund, but we need to get our solicitor to contact them so they can answer a few questions... once again I'm in a position of phoning Coffin Mew daily and sending emails and being told that I will get a call back as Elisabeth is not in the office, I'm not getting any response from my emails. I will not stop until I get this resolved, but we will be reluctant to use Coffin Mew in the future

The most unprofessional solicitors I’ve dealt with to date. Very good at taking your money but delivering nothing. Our case has been going for 4 years with a build. Coffin Mew have done nothing but slow the process down, delaying everything along the way, just so that there is more correspondence to make them more money. And now we are trying to finalise, I’ve left numerous messages with our solicitor and with reception to call me back so we can push this over the line, and they are not interested. Avoid at all costs.

Coffin Mew were excellent when helping us purchase our new home. Charlotte Goodson has been great. We were kept up to date and never had to chase anything. Very professional and helpful. About the only thing that has gone smoothly with our house purchase. We will definitely be using Coffin Mew again when we move in the future!

Coffin Mew we’re recommended to us by a friend and that recommendation was spot on. Natalie was a superstar throughout. We had challenges with an extraordinary amount of complexity that was further complicated by the representation of our buyer. Natalie offered first class advice and helped everyone in the chain achieve a conclusion that suited everyone involved. Thank you again for everything, we will be passing on that recommendation you to family and friends.

If you are moving house you want as much to be transparent as can be. Here i felt communications were poor, integrity of the messages we were getting in dealing with Coffin was not always consistent with reality. We found this company slow and a challenge to work with. We missed a number of important deadlines and they didnt get started on things until EVERYTHING was in, which meant we all had to play catch up on the issues Finally raised. It may have just been Kirsten, as we have not engaged with the rest of the firm
